California woman arrested after 27 horses found dead on multiple properties

AND California woman is facing charges after 27 dead horses were found on multiple properties outside Sacramento, police say.

The discoveries were made in Clements while police were executing search warrants related to the “permanent investigation into animal neglect,” The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office made the announcement late Wednesday.

“During the operation, several malnourished horses were discovered in the premises with limited access to any feed or water and approximately 27 dead horses were found,” it said.

“Our animal protection officers, along with veterinarians who were on the scene, immediately began triaging and assessing the condition of the horse,” police added. “After thorough assessments, 16 horses were rescued and are now in the care of the professionals at Oakdale Equine Rescue who will ensure they receive proper nutrition, medical care and rehabilitation.

“Unfortunately, four horses and one bull had to be euthanized due to extreme neglect,” police also said.

Jan Johnson of Clements was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

She is facing charges Cruelty to an Animal, Threatening a Public Official, Criminal Threats and Possession of a Short Barreled Shotgun, investigators say.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office released a photo showing at least one of the malnourished horses found in Clements on Wednesday.
