Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes says his team’s lack of confidence is his biggest concern after Sunday’s heavy defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion.
The game marked United’s first defeat of 2025 after promising recent results against Arsenal and Liverpool in the FA Cup and Premier League respectively. But it is part of a wider slump that the team has struggled to break all season – just three wins from Ruben Amorim’s 11 league games in charge, going back nearly two months, and six defeats in the same period.
Brighton broke the deadlock with a simple ball over the top inside the first few minutes at Old Trafford. But United fought back relatively well, dominating the rest of the first half and leveling the scores Fernandes I converted from the penalty spot, they conceded again immediately after the restart and did not respond again. It ended 3-1 in favor of Brighton.
“We could have stayed in the game at 2-1 [but] We also lacked a bit of belief at that point, where we could come back into the game and change the game,” Fernandes said, speaking to MUTV.
“Then you admit you make it 3-1 and everything from then on becomes a bit more difficult. We still had time to get back into the game, we still had time to do something different, but what worries me the most is the lack of confidence we have at the moment to do things that we are capable of,” lamented the captain.
“I have nothing against someone losing the ball because they are trying to help the team, but we have to get the best out of the players. We need players to believe in themselves that they are capable of turning things around for themselves.”
Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler was mentioned United possessing “world class” players when he referred to the game afterwards. But that level was nowhere to be seen. Further challenging games follow, at home to Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday, before a trip to Fulham on Sunday. Then there is a visit to Romania against FCSB and Crystal Palace at home.
