Popular Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was admitted to hospital with multiple stab injuries after an intruder allegedly broke into his home and attacked him.
The attack took place early Thursday morning in an upscale neighborhood of Mumbai, where Khan lives with his family.
The city police told BBC Marathi that the actor was injured after a fight broke out between him and an unidentified man who entered his house shortly after midnight.
Khan’s family has not made any public statements, but his publicity team said it was an “attempted burglary” without giving further details.
Khan was rushed to Lilavati City Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Niraj Uttamani, the hospital’s chief operating officer, told BBC Marathi that Khan suffered six stab wounds, two of which were deep.
“One is near the spine. He is being operated on by a team of specialist doctors,” he added.
The police launched an investigation.
“An unknown person entered the actor’s house. After that, an argument broke out between him and the intruder,” Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gedam said.
In a statement released Thursday morning, the actor’s team asked fans to respect his privacy.
“We ask the media and fans for patience. It is a police matter. We will keep you informed of the situation,” they said.
