In the 57th over, Scott Boland delivered a short ball outside off, luring Reddy to the edge. Positioned at second slip, Smith jumped to his right and made a fine grab, making the dismissal look like a textbook slip-catching exercise. Reddy’s dismissal for a golden duck added to Boland’s fiery spell and left India reeling.
Smith’s jubilation after Reddy’s dismissal came with a playful attack on the umpire, referring to an incident earlier in the day, as in the 8th over added drama in the early stages of India’s innings. Boland’s delivery, a backside ball that bit the ball, caught Kohli’s edge as he pushed forward. The ball was low and Smith appeared to have pulled it cleanly into the gully.
However, a close inspection by the third official revealed light contact with the ground, leading to a “no out” decision. The incident caused stormy reactions from both teams and intensified the already electrified atmosphere at the SCG. Catching the moment after Reddy’s catch, Smith humorously indicated that this one was “clean and out”, adding a touch of levity to a high-pressure game.
