Anti-Trump columnist Jennifer Rubin quits Washington Post, slams owner Jeff Bezos
Longtime Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin has resigned from the struggling paper, Fox News Digital has confirmed.
Rubin, an outspoken critic of President-elect Donald Trump, recently publicly attacked the Washington Post, particularly its owner Jeff Bezosfor trying to become more politically neutral.
“I’m afraid things at The Post are going from bad to worse,” Rubin told CNN in an interview about her departure.
Rubin added that the Post “failed spectacularly at a time when we most need a strong, aggressive free press.”
Rubin joins several prominent staffers who have announced departures to other newspapers, including reporters Josh Dawsey, Ashley Parker, Michael Scherer, Tyler Page and LeeAnn Caldwell, columnist Charles Lane, health and science editor Stephen Smith and veteran editor Matea Gold.
Editor-in-chief Robert Kagan and several members of the editorial board resigned last year when Bezos backed the planned release Vice President Kamala Harris.
New York Times reporter Ben Mullin published her resignation letter on X, and she took a shot at Bezos on the way out.
WASHINGTON POST BEGINS LAYOFFS, 4 PERCENT WORKFORCE REDUCTION
“Corporations and billionaire owners of major media houses have betrayed the loyalty of their audiences and sabotaged the sacred mission of journalism – to defend, protect and advance democracy. The Washington Post owner, billionaire and engaged management are among the offenders,” wrote Rubin.
“They have undermined the values that are central to The Post’s mission and all of journalistic integrity, courage and independence. I cannot justify staying at the Post,” she continued. “Jeff Bezos and his cronies are accommodating and enabling the most acute threat to American democracy – Donald Trump – at a time when a vibrant free press is more essential than ever to the survival and ability of our democracy to thrive.”
Rubin is teaming up with former Obama White House staffer Norm Eisen to launch a publication called The Contrarian. The publication’s tagline, “Owned by No One,” is a sharp reference to Jeff Bezos.
Rubin was one of the most sycophantic supporters of the Biden administration at the Washington Post, in addition to being one of the most rabidly anti-Republican voices at the already liberal paper.
