Ange Postecoglou: Even Liverpool’s ‘world class’ star Mohamed Salah would struggle at Tottenham right now | Football news
Ange Postecoglou has claimed that even Mohamed Salah would struggle at his Tottenham despite the Liverpool striker’s red-hot form in front of goal.
Salah has scored 21 goals in his 27 appearances in all competitions this season and will now look to carry that form into Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Tottenham. live on Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, Postecoglou’s side have fallen to 12th in the Premier League table after a four-game winless run, which included a 6-3 defeat at Liverpool in December.
Salah scored twice and provided two assists during that encounter and despite his excellent form during the 2024/25 season so far, Postecoglou stated that the Egyptian forward will still struggle to progress in his squad.
“Mo is a world-class player but if you put him in our squad at the moment I’m not sure he would have the same effect because of the situation we’re in as a group,” the Tottenham boss said.
“He’s playing in a fantastic team that’s flying at the moment. I’d venture to say that if you put Sonny on [Heung-Min Son] in the Liverpool team, I think his goalscoring return would be decent.
“It’s hard for our players at the moment, they’re trying really hard to be the best they can be.”
There is no rush to determine your son’s long-term future after activating the one-year option
Tottenham go into the north London showdown buoyed by the knowledge that Son Heung-min will remain at the club until at least the summer of 2026 after activating his contract extension option.
The South Korean forward has been an influential player for Spurs, scoring 169 goals in 431 appearances, but Postecoglou insists there is no rush to discuss his longer-term future.
“It’s not something that should be forced one way or the other,” he said.
“When you have a player like Sonny who has such a reputation at the club – and I know how much the club values him and how much he loves the club – I think it will all happen on both sides.
“I don’t think the club will be in a position to try to force anything or Sonny would try to force anything.
“There is enough respect and credit between both sides that these types of discussions will happen naturally and I think it will come to a conclusion that everyone will be happy with.”
Ange: Success in the Carabao Cup can help our future
Postecoglou traditionally sees league form as the best barometer of his team’s progress, but with 10 injured players and Pope Sarr and James Maddison serves a suspension against Arne Slot side, he believes that something special can be forged in adversity.
“We are having a difficult season. Our league form is really bad and we have to improve,” he said.
“But we’re in the semi-finals of the competition and with the group of players we’ve got at the moment, if we can achieve something where they are in their careers, it will set you up well for what we’re trying to build here I think.
“It’s not the be-all and end-all, as I’ve said many times. But if we get to the final and win the trophy, we’ll look back at this period where as a small group of players we had to rise above and beyond to get there.
“It will be as worthwhile an achievement as a victory.”
