The racket hit a woman in the front row and Norrie was cautioned.
The woman was not injured and actually played well.
“[The fan] was laughing and I just said, ‘Sorry, I didn’t mean to do that.’ And she said, ‘Yes, I’m completely OK.’ It wasn’t a big deal,” Norrie said after the match. “But like we’ve seen with some other players, you can easily get shut out if he catches them in the wrong spot or if they’re not looking or something.”
The racquet was dropped while Norrie was losing 6-2, 5-3. He would lose that game shortly after to lose the match.
“It’s totally not me to do something like that. I apologized very quickly, and I want to apologize in general. I’m not happy with how I behaved,” Norrie said.
Norrie was knocked out in the first round two years after reaching the tournament final.
At the 2020 US Open, with the stands empty due to COVID-19 restrictions, Novak Djokovic was disqualified after accidentally hitting a linesman with the ball. At the 2023 French Open, Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were kicked out of the women’s doubles after a ball hit by Kato hit the ball girl.
