A state lawmaker’s ban in the House of Representatives was revoked after he was hospitalized due to a viral fight

Georgia state senator has had his ban on the state House of Representatives revoked after an ugly incident Thursday in which he was thrown to the floor, arrested and then hospitalized.

State Sen. Colton Moore, a die-hard supporter President-elect Trump who previously tried to impeach Fulton County District Attorney Fanny Willis for indicting the former president, was involved in a heated argument at the entrance to the House chamber where officials denied him entry to Gov. Brian Kemp’s State of the State address.

Moore, of Trenton, Dade County, ended up being pushed to the floor by Keith Williams, an attorney for House Speaker Jon Burns’ office, who was trying to enforce the president’s ban on Moore. Moore was barred from the chamber after he denounced the state Senate’s decision to consider it last year resolution to name a building at the University of North Georgia after the now-deceased former speaker David Ralston.

Moore made several attempts to get past House staff on Thursday, but was rebuffed several times. Then William at one point sent Moore flying, and the senator clumsily fell to the floor. After another entry attempt, Moore was arrested by state troopers and taken away.

Later that evening, Moore posted a video of himself sitting on a hospital bed with a blood pressure monitor strapped to one arm. His other hand was raised on the bed rail.

“I’m really a little beat up; my hand is a little swollen and purple; we’re waiting on the X-rays to check,” Moore said.

“Today, my freedom and liberty were taken from me while I was fighting for your freedom. But I’ll tell you something, we still have a constitutional duty to do, and I’ll still be in that legislature tomorrow morning. Thank you all for your support.”

Burns first said the incident was “incredibly unfortunate” and said Moore “created a dangerous situation when he chose to use force against our law enforcement officers, dedicated gatekeepers and House staff.” Burns said the integrity and decency of this House of Representatives home “without negotiation—period.”

On Friday, Burns, a Republican from Newington, lifted his ban after state Senate and GOP leaders rallied to support Moore.

He said Moore’s desire to “cause a stir and gain notoriety in the press violated long-standing rules and precedents of decorum that every member of the General Assembly has a responsibility to uphold.” But he said he would allow Moore in joint sessions without an apology because Ralston would not want the Legislature to be disrupted.

“For that reason, the Ralston family has expressed to their family here in the House of Representatives that they want our chamber to continue operating as normal — with all members of the General Assembly present — for all future joint sessions with or without the apology they and the house deserve,” Burns said. .

Moore’s ban stemmed from a speech he gave last year in which he criticized former Speaker Ralston, who was also a Republican.

Moore accused Ralston of using his office to delay trials against defendants he represented as an attorney. In 2019, Ralston claimed it as his actions were completely legal.

“This body will mark, in my opinion, one of the most corrupt leaders of Georgia that we will ever see in my lifetime,” Moore exclaimed at the time.

It’s not the first time Colton, a self-described “RINO brawler,” has clashed with his Republican colleagues.

In 2023, the Georgia Senate Republican Caucus suspended Moore for attacking them for opposing his plan to impeach Willis for impeaching Trump in a case of election interference.

Moore has been the most prominent proponent of a special session to impeach and remove Willis or remove her from office, gaining Trump’s support. Kemp denounced the call as “some fraudulent scam” to collect campaign contributions for Moore.

The Willis case eventually unraveled, in part because she was in it romantic relationship with the prosecutor she hired.

Moore was booked into the Fulton County Jail on a misdemeanor charge of willfully obstructing a law enforcement officer.

After Moore took a picture mimicking the famous image of Donald Trump in the same jail, a fan posted Moore’s $1,000 bail.

Lt. Edward Starling, a troop spokesman, said there was no update on whether the charges would be dropped.
