3 European clubs plan to loan Marcus Rashford, who was expelled from Man Utd
Marcus Rashford could have a number of options to choose from if he leaves Manchester United this month, even if only on loan.
Rashford has not played for United since December 12 when he started the Europa League win against Viktoria Plzen and was withdrawn after just 56 minutes. The 27-year-old was sent off ahead of the Manchester derby three days later, after which he went public with a willingness to accept a “new challenge”. The academy graduate ended up being left out of four consecutive matchday squads.
Rashford returned to the bench for the 2024 closer against Newcastle United but did not feature before illness ruled him out of training in the build-up to 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.
There is every chance that he could stay at United. But The Athletic notes that “interest is growing” and talks are underway to determine what the viable options are, with Borussia Dortmund now joining the list of suitors weighing up a January loan move. Juventus and AC Milan are two other European heavyweights on Rashford’s tail, as well as unnamed Premier League clubs.
Dortmund are at least well-versed in dealing with United, even though a new sporting hierarchy took control after the sale Jadon Sancho 2021 and took him on loan last year.
A big obstacle standing in the way of any loan would be the wages Rashford earns at Old Trafford, and what share is covered by the future other club. United would understandably want that to be as much as possible, but that could be a problem.
Rashford’s own preference he is likely to point him in the direction of the club he feels gives him the best chance of getting his career back on track, especially with the start of a new cycle in England. This means there are a lot of moving parts and they all need to line up.
At his best, Rashford is a 30-goal-a-season striker. He has failed to replicate that form over the last 18 months but, even as recently as the beginning of the Ruben Amorim era, he has shown an ability to score, scoring three times in the new manager’s first two games.
