Who will win the women’s Superliga 2024/25?
The Women’s Super League (WSL) has officially broken up for the winter break after 10 mathematically action-packed days so far.
After the rampage from the first minute, Chelsea increased the gap to the top of the table to six points. Injury-hit Manchester City trail the Blues by six points, following a shock 2-1 defeat by Everton in Round 10.
Arsenal have made waves in recent weeks, having made up ground after a disappointing start to the 2024/25 season. The Gunners have gone 11 games unbeaten under interim manager Renee Slegers and are currently just one point behind Man City.
Manchester United remains tied at the top of the table, just below Topnik on goal difference.
Here 90 minutes predicting who will win the WSL this season.
Round 10 had all the twists and turns, as Chelsea finally had their winning streak ended by a stubborn Leicester City side at the King Power Stadium. Missy Goodwin’s early opener put the Foxes on course for all three points, before Wieke Kaptein managed to pull the score back.
As for second-placed City, Gareth Taylor’s side were outplayed by Everton at Walton Hall Park. Missing some of their biggest stars, Man City didn’t have the answers to what was asked of them and missed the chance to close the gap on Chelsea.
Arsenal seized the opportunity to make up for lost time, as a 1-0 win over Liverpool was enough for three points on Merseyside. The question is whether the Gunners have left the title race a little too late, but they are certainly in the race to leapfrog City in the standings.
Manchester United are also in the running for Champions League qualification but have shown their vulnerability could see them out of the title race altogether.
Chelsea’s fast start puts them in the driver’s seat for the second half of the season, and with the quality of squad they possess, it should be a smooth ride. Sonia Bompastor will welcome the return of Lauren James, Sam Kerr and Mia Fishel in the new year, which will make the opposition very scared.
With both Arsenal and Man City also in the Champions League, the Blues won’t have to worry about having to play more games than their WSL counterparts.
As for the race for second place, we predict that Arsenal could take that second place if they are to maintain their current form. Taylor has shown his vulnerability time and time again when faced with adversity, and it looks like this injury spell could lead to the same outcome.
City will need to regain their composure if they are to continue to put the heat on Chelsea at the top. Head coach Taylor confirmed that City ‘hope to do some work’ in the January transfer window to fill the gaps created by current injuries to Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp, Vivianne Miedema and Khadija Shaw.
If Arsenal sign Renee Slegers until the end of the season, the north London side could have enough momentum to continue competing at a high level. January interest in Keira Walsh could also help bolster this Arsenal squad if they can seal a deal for the England midfielder.
