When does the January 2025 transfer window open?
The 2024/25 season still hasn’t reached its halfway mark, but there will be a number of clubs across Europe already dreaming up a big winter spending spree.
During the summer there was a flurry of activity around the world transfer window, with billions spent in Europe’s top five leagues alone. Premier League clubs have spent £2.1 billion alone, but it is highly unlikely that that much money will be thrown away at the start of the new year.
The January transfer window tends to be quieter, especially for Europe’s top teams, but it offers struggling teams the chance to bolster their squads or protect against injuries. There will be plenty of teams already desperate for the opening of the winter market.
Here are all the details about the January 2025 transfer window.
There is no set opening date for the January transfer window worldwide. Different leagues open and close the shutters at different times.
The Premier League’s winter window opens on Wednesday, January 1. The market will also open on New Year’s Day in Ligue 1 and Bundesliga, as well as the Saudi Pro League.
However, in La Liga and Serie A, clubs will have to wait until Thursday, January 2 to get the job done.
The January transfer window is open for about a month and closes in early February in most of Europe.
The Premier League’s winter window closes on Monday 3 February at 23:00 GMT, with the top leagues of Italy, France, Germany and Spain closing their windows on the same date – although times will vary.
The Saudi professional league closes earlier than the major European leagues – much to the relief of many European clubs – and will close on Thursday 30 January.

It promises to be an intriguing winter window for Liverpool fans, who fear for the future as the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold expire next summer. All three will be able to sign deals with clubs outside of England this January if they decide to leave Anfield at the end of the current campaign.
Elsewhere in Premier Leaguethere is likely to be significant movement. The likes of Eberechi Eze, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anthony Gordon and Bryan Mbeum could attract interest from the division’s top teams, while Manchester City could look for a replacement for Rodri given his absence for the rest of the season.
Victor Osimhen is another one to watch. The Napoli forward made a surprise loan move to Galatasaray at the end of the summer window, but could make a permanent move in the winter. Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain will be among his suitors.
