“We spent my entire salary, I have nothing left”
The ex-wife of Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez, Valentina Cervantes, opened up about her relationship with the midfielder before they split earlier this year. Fernandez joined the Blues in a £107 million move in January 2023, a Premier League record at the time, which was later broken by Moises Caicedo£115m transfer.
The pair parted ways in October, with the 23-year-old midfielder struggling with playing time. He has since regained his form and has scored 10 goals in eight games in various competitions since the start of November for Chelsea.
In a recent interview with Game, Set & Match, Cervantes talked about her relationship with the player and the amicable split. The social media influencer said (via the Daily Mail):
“Everything was fine and suddenly one day he told me he didn’t want to be anymore. There are things I still have to process, but that’s it, I accepted. When we met, I was working in an empanada restaurant and he was studying law in the lower part of Rijeka, and then I played in the reserve team, I changed my job to a call center near Obelisk.
“Then I earned more than his representative gave him, we spent my entire salary, I had nothing to save. And after 9 months I got pregnant with Olivia, I was 19 years old”
When asked if she was still in love with Fernandez, Cervantes replied:
“I think love is still there because it’s very hard for it to leave so soon. I don’t depend on a man or anyone to make me happy. I will always be happy in the company of my children.”
Chelsea next face Irish side Shamrock Rivers in the Conference League on Thursday night (December 19).
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca praises Enzo Fernandez’s attitude
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca drew attention to how Enzo Fernandez dealt with the lack of playing time. The Italian believes that Fernandez can serve as an example to other teammates.
At the end of October, before Fernandez’s rise in form, Maresca talked about the lack of minutes played by midfieldersexplaining Chelsea’s need for physicality in the middle of the park.
Now that Fernandez has turned things around, Maresca has hailed the midfielder for the way he has been training despite his struggles to break into the starting XI. The Chelsea boss said (per the club’s official website):
“Enzo is a very good example. Noni [Madeueke] is the same. Even when they weren’t playing, they were doing the right things. It was my decision to leave them out, but it wasn’t because they trained poorly or misbehaved. These were simple technical decisions.
“Sometimes, when you leave players out, you hurt them and motivate them to give something more, but Enzo can be a good example for others.”
