US says Guantanamo detainee returned to Tunisia
Guantanamo Bay detainee Ridah Bin Saleh al-Yazidi has been returned to Tunisia, the US Department of Defense announced.
He was determined to be eligible for transfer from a detention facility after a “rigorous interagency review process,” the press release said.
The Pentagon did not say whether Mr. Yazidi accepted any blame.
Since 2002, the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay has been used to hold what the US describes as captured illegal combatants during the US “war on terror”.
The camp is part of the US naval base complex in southeastern Cuba.
According to an unconfirmed report by the New York Times, Mr. Yazidi was never charged and was granted a transfer more than ten years ago.
The newspaper also said he had been at Guantanamo Bay since the facility was first established in 2002.
According to the Pentagon on Monday statement26 prisoners remain at Guantanamo Bay, of which 14 are eligible for transfer.
Earlier in December, the Pentagon announced that the US had repatriated three more prisoners, the Associated Press news agency reported.
The camp was established by the Bush administration to detain the most dangerous suspects for interrogation and prosecution of war crimes.
Controversy centered on the period in which detainees were held without charge and the use of interrogation techniques.
