Ruben Amorim reveals his job is ‘at risk’ after breaking Man Utd’s unwanted record
Ruben Amorim has accepted that his position in charge of Manchester United is already “at risk” after losing half of his first ten matches in charge.
The Portuguese boss supervised a a limp 2-0 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day which left the Red Devils languishing in 14th place Premier League table.
Amorim began his tenure in charge of United with an unconvincing 1-1 draw at Portman Road with Ipswich Town before overseeing wins against Bodo/Glimt and Everton. However, the former Sporting CP manager lost five of his next seven games, including three in the space of seven days either side of Christmas.
Because of this disastrous start, Amorim became the first Manchester United the manager lost as many as five of his first ten games in charge to Walter Crickmer in January 1932. Crickmer was more akin to a club secretary than a manager in the modern sense and enjoyed 39 years working for the club in a number of capacities. , earning him the nickname ‘Mr Manchester United’.
Amorim tries to last another 39 days.
“The manager of Manchester United can never, no matter what, feel comfortable,” the 39-year-old head coach told reporters a day after his team hazy loss at Molineux. “You can argue that I’ve been here for a month and I’ve had four training sessions [sessions]but we don’t win. That’s the reality.”
United took Amorim away from Sporting – who were unbeaten in all competitions when their talismanic coach stepped down in November – at a heavy cost. A combination of his eight-figure buyout clause and the hefty package Erik ten Hag was owed after being fired mid-season came to an amount of 21.4 million pounds. However, this financial investment does not make Amor more secure.
“I know that if we don’t win, whether we pay the ransom or not, every manager is in danger,” he pointed out. – I like that because it’s work.
