Mayor Seattle Bruce Harrell proposes legislation that supports transgender care in the city
Democratic Mayor Seattle This week, he proposed a City Regulation to strengthen protection for those seeking transgender care and surgery, at the same time inviting Trump administration “hatred, dangerous and discriminatory attacks” against LGBTQ+ communities.

On Thursday, the conservative leader of Radio Seattle Jason Rantz called Harrell’s suggested “Extreme” city legislation, but “mostly toothless” and mostly “virtue of signaling” to gain a service with progencing in Seattlu.
Harrell proposed legislation after President Donald Trump signed Executive command stopping federal financing of transgender health services for people under the age of 19.
“We are proud of the reputation of Seattle as a welcome and inclusive city for the LGBTQ+ community and recognize their immense contribution to the vibrancy and culture of our city,” “ Harrell said in a statement this week.
“This legislation is a tangible step to strengthen local protection and stand with our LGBTQ+ community in the face of hatred, dangerous and discriminatory attacks of Trump administration and others, ensuring that they all have access to essential health services.”

Trump’s executive commands were welcomed by lawsuits and are currently blocked by the courts.
Some hospitals across the country stopped transgender care after Trump’s executive commands to avoid loss of funds.
Seattlo judge also blocked orders in four countries in one of the lawsuits filed by a group of states led by Democrats.

Harrell added that the Ordinance confirms the “Washington State Protection Law” that protects transgender people who need reproductive services and those who provide them from prosecution.

Harrell noted this week in the release of the city that it signed a law in 2022, which made the teasing of a reproductive or transgender care offense.
He added that, as a member of the City Council in Seattl before the election, he was a “vocal” advocate of access to transgender care for city employees.
