The arrest of southern Sudan Gabriel Doup Lam violates the peace agreement, says the opposition

The arrest of the main opposition of the army from the southern Sudan is “a violation of the great peace agreement ended by a five -year civil war, said the opposition spokesman for the BBC.

Gen Gabriel Duop Lam was arrested earlier this week, along with other senior officials of the liberation movement of Sudan in opposition (SPLM-IO).

Prisoners are all ally of Vice -President Riek Machara, whose breakup with President Salva Kiir caused an devastating war in 2013.

On Thursday morning, Machar’s spokesman said that SPLM-Io did not know how their officials were or where they held.

“We do our best to avoid any escalation in the situation, but our partners are in peace to show political will to convince that this country will no longer return to war,” Pook and Baluang told the BBC Newsday program.

President Kiir insisted that South Sudan would not return to war, spokesman Michael Makuei told reporters in Jubi’s capital on Wednesday.

Makuei added that the opposition figures were arrested because they were “in conflict with the law”.

South Sudan is the latest world nation after seizing Sudan in 2011. But only two years later, a civil war broke out when Kiir fired his entire cabinet and accused Machar of launching a failed coup.

After five years, with a lost 400,000 lives and 2.5 million people forced from their homes, a peace agreement was agreed in 2018.

But since then it was framed.

Gen Lam is in charge of the military wing of the opposition party, which is yet to be integrated into the army. He was detained on Tuesday.

Another Machar ally, oil minister of Puot Kang Chol, took the security forces in the middle of the night.

Machar’s house in the capital, Juba, was surrounded by troops from the southern Sudanese army overnight before they retreated later.

All other senior military officials related to Machar were put in home custody, understands the BBC.

The arrests are followed by reports that the white army militia has seized a strategic city in the state of Gornja Nil near the Ethiopian border, after a confrontation with government troops.

The white army struggled with Machar during the Civil War.

Some in the army, loyal to Kiir, accused Machar’s allies of supporting the rebels.

Macharov’s spokesman told the BBC that the current struggles between the white army and the security force “avoid” that the leadership of the National Army would be complied with the peace agreement.

The UN and African Union warned that violence in this area can be potentially expanded.

Ter Manyang, head of the Peace and Advocacy Center based in Juba, told Reuters that the fighting in the area could threaten the peace agreement.

“The country is likely to slide into war, unless the situation is governed by the highest leadership of the country,” he said.

The country has never held elections – they should now be held in 2026 after years of delay.
