Jean-Philippe Mateta faces Everton, live Sky Sports On Saturday, after scoring two Premier League goals for his Braca in the Crystal Palace win over Manchester United this season. The attacker continues to flourish under Oliver Gazette.
Since the first Austrian match was borrowed last February, a 3-0 victory over Burnley in which Mateta hit Palace third from the penalty area, the 27-year-old scored 23 times in 37 trips, placing him only two behind Mohamed Salah in the same time frame and the fifth total.
His overall number is in a scattered company, far ahead of celebrated names like Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Bryan Mbeumo Brentford. It is quite a turnaround for a player who has only achieved 11 times in 80 games for Palace before the Palace.
It helps, of course, to finally play regularly.
Mateta, signing 9 million pounds from the German club Mainz 2022 after the loan, mostly used as a replacement at first, just won the initial place late in the second magic of Roy Hodgson. The Premier League of 37 began under Glasner.
But Glasner changed Matina’s role as well as his toy time, helping maximizing the striker output, conversely, narrowing his kindergarten on the field.
According to his heat, a player who has previously escaped into wide areas to combine with Palace wings, now he is much more focused on the central zone, where he can be more dangerous. “It’s amazing in the box,” Glasner said after winning Manchester United.
Mateta must cover smaller soils, helping him save energy. And despite the average of less touch, he has an almost identical number of shots because he was under Glasner’s predecessors. The difference is that they come from better positions.
According to Opta, he gets three times more big chances in 90 minutes. Its shots are valid with an average of 0.24 expected targets, earlier than 0.14. His shot cards show less angular efforts and greater concentration than the center of the box.
This is followed by a far greater percentage of them. But improvement comes down to a better service as well as better positioning. Glasnar’s tendency to the back three helped on that front, allowing him to re -configure his attack on Mateta.
Mateta is a little need for Mateta to retreat to her hips when Glasner has the wings of Daniel Munoz and Tyrick Mitchel who occupy these areas.
This couple in turn enabled Palace’s wide attackers, one of which is Eberechi Eze, who previously played in the central midfielder, to move inside and act in the immediate vicinity of Mateta.
Eze is the best service provider. The 26-year-old has set up seven goals in the Premier League since the appointment of Gazette. But Mateta also receives a regular minor and Mitchella service, and the former at Old Trafford was on the second of two goals.
Glasner also pointed out the importance of his run without a ball. Geniusiq Mateta monitoring data is the fourth in the Premier League to start causing a background of opposition this season.
These races are only partly placed in points. They also require selflessness. “Do so much running where he doesn’t get the ball,” said Glasner recently. Often the intention is to simply create space for teammates with stretch opponents.
Despite everything, Mateta continues to go to a large extent without any palaces. Maybe this is because he looks at him as “old-fashioned” in style, quoting Thierry Henry, his coach at last year’s Olympic Games, where he scored five goals for Silver-Medallister France.
At 6ft 3ins, strong in the air and excellent in holding the ball, Mateta certainly has the qualities of a traditional targeted man. The choked shirt adds to this aesthetics.
But he became much more. It is worth noting that only three of the 34 goals of the Premier League came with his head. Nine came with his weaker left foot. It also has a tendency for icy, rounded finish.
One of his best weaker efforts came in a sublime style against Ipswich in December, when he raised a skilled end of goalkeeper Arijnet Murica after leaving Jacob Greaves’ defender on the back with the stalling of the fleet and rafla acceleration.
Was a further example of his comprehensive development in a recent victory over West Ham, when, in similar circumstances, as Ipswich goal, after running on the ball behind, Mateta chosen to take his shot early, finding the lower corner from the lower corner of outside frame.
Mateta started the season relatively slowly after efforts at the Olympic Games. But that decline served to highlight another of his strength: his mentality. “I demolished him two or three times, but he always remained positive,” Glasner recalled last month. “He was always a good guy and continued to work hard.”
His contribution to Old Trafford was just the latest example of his importance to achieve key goals. In fact, from Gazette’s appointment, Mateta’s goals were worth 14 points of Palace.
Continue in the same way and, late, Mateta may soon start attracting the recognition that his performances deserve.
