There used to be a multiplex near my house that we called “Babysitter 12”, because it felt like, regardless of the movie, the theater was always a lot of people laughing, screaming, horseing around. I stopped going there after a while because, although it was fun to be part of a tumultuous crowd during, say, Marvel’s movie, the permanent dunes during more serious films became disturbing. Dadica 12 closed during the pandemic, when the living rooms of people became their theater.
My colleague Marie Solis recently wrote Times story About the “laugh epidemic” in cinemas. People laugh aloud during the violent, sexy and scary scenes in movies such as “Anora”, “Babygirl” and “Nosphererat”. For some filmmakers, this behavior is awful, awkwardly with what they think you should answer the answer should be.
Marie presents some theories about why some people laugh at times that others think they require more gravity. Maybe we’re used to watching movies at home and forgetting the theater label. There were such genre collapse in the movies that it can be difficult to say what should be funny and what is not – is the “babygirl” erotic thriller or erotic comedy? We may be embarrassed by the scene, so we laugh nervously, or laugh to show us to get a reference.
Last summer, I saw a pretty serious movie about a violent relationship in the theater and I was surprised how many laughs there were during a tense scene. I had a feeling that groups of friends who laughed and joked before the lights extinguished, hardly changing gears, that their laughter was almost like a failure in their software as they went out of joy from high moody night to the sober nature what they watched on the screen.
I remembered the experience of the nuns 12, how part of the reasons I stopped going was that I didn’t like it when I felt that others behave badly. My tendency was to be busy who trembled a party that was just doing well. I like the rules of Alamo Draftthouse theater, where they declare that everyone who uses a cell phone or talks during the movie. (I have never seen this happen and imagine that the threat of such sanctions is enough to scare potential patrons.)
The point of going to the cinema are other people, however intrusive and confusing they can. The reactions of other filmmakers to the movie are part of the movie. Yes, there are now there are emissions designed to flow alone, at home, on a small screen. But when I am in the theater, I want to be generous, to take over the fullness of the audience, the community. I want to let it all, to subscribe to the opinion that one person Marie talked about it: that experiencing emotions not only about the movie you watch but to your audience members is “What makes a movie movie really exciting.” in his living room.
