Virat Kohli finalizes Test retirement date, but BCCI may drop him before then

Former Indian captain Virat Kohli is on the verge of ending his Test career after a poor performance in the format for the past few years. According to the latest reports, Virat Kohli’s inconsistent performances are making it difficult for the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee to consider him for the England tour.

The 36-year-old batsman’s recent Test form has been hampered by technical flaws and his crease line-up. Despite an impressive overall record in the Test, his performance has declined in recent years. The right-handed batsman averages just 31.32 in the last 38 Tests before the ongoing fifth Test in Sydney.

Kohli entered the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 after a poor home series against New Zealand, where he averaged under 16 in the three Tests. He started the BGT with a brilliant second innings century in Perth, but has since struggled at an average of just 27.83 in four Tests in Australia.

Virat Kohli retires at The Oval after fifth Test – Kushan Sarkar

Sports journalist Kushan Sarkar has said that Virat Kohli is making it difficult for the selectors to pick him for the upcoming series in England. Sarkar also mentioned that there was speculation that Kohli might retire after the fifth Test at The Oval, but for that to happen on his terms, he would need to score points.

“Virat Kohli is making it increasingly difficult for the Ajit Agarkar-led National Selection Committee to pick him for the England series. There is a theory doing the rounds that he will retire at the Oval after the fifth Test. But to do it his way, he should have run and now Oval’s retirement seems a distant dream,” wrote Kushan Sarkar on X (formerly known as Twitter).
