Top American election official says Trump illegal tried to release

Commissioner of the US Federal Election Commission (FEC) and President Ellen Weintraub said on Thursday that she received a letter from US President Donald Trump she sought to release, but added that the lawsuit was illegal.

IN Post on xWeintraub attached a letter from January 31, signed by Trump, saying, “You are removed as a member of the Federal Election Commission, immediately enters into force.”

Ever since he assumed his post last month, Trump, a Republican, has embarked on a massive government transformation, shooting and placing hundreds of civil servants and top officials in agencies in his first steps according to the reduction of bureaucracy and installing more loyalists.

“There is a legal way to replace the Commissioner FEC,” said Weintraub, Democrat, in his post, adding “this is not.”

“I was fortunate to serve the American people and arouse some good problems along the way. That doesn’t change soon.”

FEC has more than 300 employees, with six commissioners at the top. The Vice President of the FEC, James Trainor, is a Republican.

Weintraub has been a commissioner at the FEC since 2002, according to the FEC website. He writes “She served as a consistent voice for the meaningful implementation of the Campaign Financing Act and Robust Detection.”

Commissioner FEC is appointed president and confirms by the US Senate.

According to the law, more than three commissioners cannot represent the same political party, and at least four votes are required for any official complaint of the Commission, the FEC’s website says.
