Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the newly appointed Syria President Ahmed al-Sharaa talked about deepening security bonds in the answer to the Kurdish fighters in the northeast of Syria-Tiac meetings in Ankara.
A visit to Tuesday marked the second international journey of Al-Sharaa since he officially became a temporary leader in Syria, after meeting Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia earlier this week, Mohammed Bin Salman in Riyadh.
Al-Sharaa led Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) a rebel group that overthrew the Government of the longtime Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on the lightning offensive in December.
Speaking together with al-Shara at a press conference in Ankara, Erdogan He said that Turkiye was ready to partner with the new Syrian leadership, especially when it comes to the fight against the Isil (ISIS) armed group and Kurdish fighters with headquarters in northeastern Syria.
“I would like to express our satisfaction with the strong obligation my brother Ahmed al-Sharaa has shown in the fight against terrorism,” Erdogan said.
“I told Al-Sharaa that we were ready to provide the necessary support to Syria in the fight against all kinds of terrorism, whether it was Daesh or PKK,” he added, referring to the Arab Acronym for ISIL and the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
Turkiye, which divides the border with Syria, several Syrian Kurdish groups located near the southern demarcation as a “terrorist”. They include PKK as well as people to protect people (YPG).
YPG makes a large part of the United States supported Kurdish-Vedi Syrian Democratic forces (SDF)which controls a large series of Syrian northeast.
The SDF remains a key ally in the coalition under the leadership of the United States, which is fighting ISIL in Syria. But since the fall of Al-Assad, Turkish officials were increasingly pushing themselves to take over the surgery.
Reporting from Ankara, Sinem Kosooglu Al Jazeera said that Al-Sharaa had received a “very cordial welcome” from Erdogan as he again pushed to take over the fight against ISIL and promised to put pressure on the Kurdish fighters.
“[Erdogan] Confirmed Turkiye is ready to help control [ISIL prison] Camps in northern and eastern Syria, which means that the campsites control and manage Syrian democratic forces and YPG, the Syrian Kurdish combat group, “Kosooglu said.
“He said the fight against [ISIL] And PKK should continue. “
Defense, migrants, shops
For his part, Al-Sharaa said his government sought a “strategic partnership” with Turkiya while inviting Erdogan to visit Syria “the earliest opportunity.”
The statements emphasize the great diverting in the region, and in 2011, Ankara interrupted ties with Damascus in 2011 after the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War. Turkiye opposed Al-Assad during the conflict.
“We are working to build a strategic partnership with Turkiya to face security threats in the region to guarantee lasting safety and stability to Syria and Turkiya,” Al-Sharaa said.
He added that the couple discussed “threats that prevent territorial unity in northeast of Syria”-a preference on the SDF that supports the US. Al-Sharaa rejected any form of Kurdish self-government and invited the SDF to hand over its weapons.
Two leaders also talked about a new defense patio that has been widely reported about in recent days, Kosooglu reported. The pact could see Turkiye establishing new bases in Syria, outside those already existing along the Turkiye border.
“The military basics that Turkiya has established in the last few years to protect his borders from PKK and YPG attacks are still there. They have not closed,” Kosooglu said. “But they talk about new military bases. They are unknown for now.”
After the meeting, Erdogan committed to continue to press to abolish international sanctions imposed on Syria during the reign of Al-Assad. Allowing sanctions was the main priority of Al-Sharaa because in recent weeks it has been an aggressive diplomatic incentive.
Erdogan added that it is important that the Arab and Muslim countries support the new Damascus government – financially and otherwise – in the transition period.
As for the questions of Syrian refugees and migrants, Erdogan said he believed that the voluntary return of Syrian would pick up the pace as the earth became more stable.
Turkiye hosted the largest number of Syrian refugees after the outbreak of Syrian civil war in 2011 – more than 3.8 million at its peak 2022.
The couple also discussed economic relationships. This comes because Turkish transport and production companies are increasingly watching plans to spread Syria.
