World Test Championship set for the main overhaul with a two -layer format ahead of India Tour of England
The International Center for Cricket (ICC) is considering the main overhaul of the World Cup Championship model (WTC) before its fourth cycle. The current format will be abolished and the two -layer system will be introduced after the final match of the WTC 2025 between Australia and South Africa.
The next World Cup cycle in the test will begin with a five -game test series between England and India in July 2025. The current structure of the World Cup Championship faced criticism and players and experts, concerns about lack of uniformity and honesty towards all teams.

According to Telegraph Sport, President of the Cricket of England and Wales (ECB) Committee, Richard Thompson, who also runs the International Committee of the Cricket Council, is leading efforts to renew the World Cup format.
Thompson cooperates with the ICC Jay Shah President to introduce a new format before the next cycle begins. The two recently held talks in Dubai to solve problems with the current system and create a “fair competition”.
“It is fully understood that the current structure does not function in the way it needs and we need to find a fairer, better competition, but no recommendations presented at this stage,” Thompson told Telegraph Sport.
“We have five months to work on this, let’s step down and look at what the structure should go ahead. The World Test Championship should be more fair and more competitive. This will change to ensure that it always encourages the best teams to reach the finals and encourage other nations that want to play test crickets, playing the test cricket. We will protect, grow and ensure the integrity of the test cricket because the format is crucial for DNA games, “he added.
India, Australia and England are the only teams playing more than 15 tests
In the current World Cup cycle, only India, Australia and England played more than 15 tests. South Africa, who are finalists, only played 12 games, and all of his six series was two matches.
This inconsistency is criticized because teams do not face every other country. Political reasons prevented India and Pakistan to play with each other. It is worth noting that South Africa has progressed to the WTC finals without facing Australia, although at Lord’s it will meet in a title in June.
Four -day series tests, excluding the “big three” considered
ICC explores the possibility of introducing four -day tests for series that do not include ‘Big Three’ (India, Australia and England). This change is considered due to difficulties in scheduling in the calendar of the crislette, which is already filled with international events with a white ball and a franchise crisis.
Many tests end these days early, which is feasible for shortening format and still ensure quality cricket.
