The Rafah Rafah border crossing, the main entrance and output point for the territory, is reopened after eight months to allow the sick and wounded Palestinians to move to Egypt to obtain treatment.
Fifty patients, including children with cancer, entered Egypt to access medical care, according to the HAMAS Ministry of Health.
The transition has been closed since the Israeli forces took control of the Gaza side in May last year.
The key Gateway, a vital channel for help, reopened as part of the tribute agreement and hostages between Hamas and Israel.
The recordings of evacuated persons show Palestinian children in brackets and emergency vehicles that come to the border crossing.
“We were waiting for this day impatient,” said Mai Khader Abdul Ghani, whose son Moatasem Billah Rami Nabil Sammour, he told a rare autoimmune disease, today for BBC Arabic’s Gaza.
She said her son was put on intensive care at the Nasser Hospital in Gaza and that he had suffered from severe pain in the last three months.
“Thank God his name was included in the treatment recommendation. I hope his suffering will end after receiving appropriate treatment,” she said.
She added that the treatment of the disease was not available in gauze due to the closure of the transition, the lack of drug and the general lack of health care.
Her son said he was of great pain as he waited for him to direct him to the hospital in Egypt.
“I have serious difficulty in moving, my mouth has ulcers, and I also have difficulty eating, drinking and everything,” he said.
Mohammed Abu Jalala was also among those followed by relatives who crossed the border for treatment. He said his niece Lara Abu Jalala suffered serious injuries with her feet after a bombing, in which they killed her parents and three brothers.
“One foot was so badly damaged that it needed to be amputated. We tried to avoid the amputation, but that had to be done because the foot had gangrene into the bones,” he said. “The other is still injured and needs treatment, and amputation needs monitoring and treatment.”
In an interview with the BBC from the crossing, Dr. Rik Peeperkorn, a representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the West Coast and Gaza, described the evacuation as a “neat” and “dispute” process.
“The ambulances go one by one, first with patients who do not walk, then walk to patients and followers. They will check them and then move to the Egyptian side,” he said.
It estimates that 14,000 people need access to treatment that they cannot get in Gaza.
Which estimates that half of these patients are “associated with injuries to war and trauma, amputated, burns, spinal injuries that will need more surgery and specialized rehabilitation,” he said, adding that the other half suffers from chronic diseases.
“About 5000 of them we expect them to be children.”
EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday that the block had arranged a monitoring mission at the crossing.
“This will support Palestinian border staff and enable the transfer of individuals from Gaza, including those who need medical care,” she wrote on X.
Rafah transition is the southernmost post of exit from Gaza. There are only two other border crossings from the Gaza – Erez tape, a transition to Israel in northern Gazi, which is for people, and Kerem Shala, exclusively commercial slave with Israel in southern Gazi.
More than 47,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, says the Hamas Health Ministry.
The offensive came after about 1,200 people were killed and 251 was taken to Gaza as hostages when Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.
The re -opening of the Rafah crossing came as Israel and Hamas made their fourth release on hostage and replacement of prisoners since the truce began on January 19.
Israel released 183 Palestinian prisoners and detainees in exchange for three Israeli hostages – Yarden Bibas, Ofer Kalderon and Keith Siegel.
