‘People ask why I don’t move’: Life in the shadow of Auschwitz
Oswiecim in southern Poland is best known as the place where the Nazis built the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. But for the roughly 40,000 people who call Oswiecim home, it’s a place where daily life goes on like anywhere else. With January 27, 2025 marking 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, some hope others will soon begin to see Oswiecim as more than a site of Nazi atrocities.
