Driver who killed dozens in car attack in China executed

A man who killed dozens by driving his car into people exercising outside a stadium in southern China has been executed, state media reported.

Fan Weiqiu, 62, killed at least 35 people and injured dozens more on November 11 after he crashed his car into a practice track in Zhuhai, in what is considered the deadliest attack on Chinese soil in a decade.

The rampage was fueled by Fan’s “dissatisfaction” with how his assets were divided after the divorce, the court heard.

His execution on Monday comes less than a month after a court sentenced him to death.

Fan was found guilty of “endangering public safety”, with the court describing his motive as “extremely despicable” and the “methods” he used “particularly cruel”.

The attack was one of 19 attacks against foreigners that occurred across China in 2024, including two within a week of the Zhuhai attack.
