Washington Post Says Biden Presidency ‘Unpopular’ But ‘History May Be Kinder’

The Washington Post The editorial wrote on Saturday that history may be kinder to President Biden, whose presidency is “currently unpopular,” as only one-third of the country views him favorably.

“Many Americans now associate Biden with inflation (although it has cooled), a porous southern border that has let millions of migrants through, a disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, a broken promise not to pardon his son and, most of all, his stubborn determination to seek a second term for which he wasn’t ready – none of that improved his popularity,” the editors wrote under the headline, “Biden’s presidency is now unpopular. History could be kinder.”

The president will officially leave office on Monday, as President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated and begin his second term as president.

The Post cited several of the president’s accomplishments, including “leading the country out of the pandemic, releasing vaccines, helping steer the economy to a soft landing” and “appointing the first African-American woman to the Supreme Court.”

PRESIDENT BIDEN PUBLISHED FAREWELL LETTER, SAYS ‘IT HAS BEEN THE PRIVILEGE OF MY LIFE TO SERVE THIS NATION’

Columnists, pundits and political commentators are spoke about the president’s legacy as he prepares to leave, suggesting that Biden’s refusal to drop out of the race early and the fact that Trump was elected to a second term would be what Americans would remember most.

The editorial board lamented that much of what the president had brought in his four years would be undone by the newly elected president.

“Other Biden initiatives appear doomed, along with Biden’s guiding philosophy. The incoming administration is likely to reverse Pentagon policies allowing access to abortion and protecting transgender athletes. Biden’s noble support for institutions and norms is also likely to disappear; the body sees it as a defense of an unpopular status quo,” the committee wrote.

The editorial also claimed that Biden may have succeeded in “lowering the national temperature.”

“As the 2024 results showed, many Americans were happy enough to have Biden, not Trump, as president for the past four years. He may have struggled to bridge partisan divides and failed to become popular, but he succeeded in lowering the national temperature — for a while,” they wrote.
