Dick Vitale’s On-Air Return Delayed After Home Accident Creates ‘Health Challenges’, ‘Physical Limitations’

Famous basketball broadcaster Dick Vitale won’t be back in the booth next week to call Duke vs. Wake Forest on ESPN after an accident at his home in Florida.

Vitale announced on Saturday that he was hospitalized after collapsing at his home. In a statement, Vitale said the incident left him with a new one health challenges and physical limitations.

“I had an accident at my home in Florida, and that created new health challenges and short-term physical limitations for me,” Vitale said.

“Now I’ll just have to wait a little longer. I’m not sure exactly when that will be, but I’m expected to make a full recovery and I’ll give updates when I have more information. Despite this latest issue, I feel blessed to have the support of my family, friends and a teammate from ESPN.”

Vitale hasn’t announced a game in two years amid battles with various health issues, including cancer on his vocal cords.

Vitale was diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2021 and then a few months later was diagnosed with lymphoma. He returned in the fall of 2021, but later had to leave to undergo vocal cord surgery.

Vitale announced in the summer of 2023 that the cancer had spread to his vocal cords and later to his lymph nodes, leaving him battling four cancers in four years.

He underwent radiation therapy, chemotherapy and multiple surgeries over the past two years, before announcing earlier this month that he was cancer-free.

However, after a recent slump, Vitale will have to bounce back at least one more time before college basketball fans hear him call another game.
