Dozens injured, trapped in ski lift accident in northern Spain Reuters
MADRID (Reuters) – A ski lift collapsed at a resort in Spain’s Aragon region on Saturday, injuring dozens of people, nine seriously and eight seriously, the regional government said.
About 80 people were trapped, hanging in a cable car at the Astun ski resort, in the province of Huesca, according to state TV channel TVE.
“It was as if the cable came loose, the chairs bounced and people were thrown,” the witness told TVE.
The cause of the cable failure remains unknown.
The ski resort management refused to comment and could not immediately say whether there were foreigners among the injured.
Several helicopters were operating in the area to rescue skiers still trapped on the cable car and transfer the injured to nearby hospitals.
The Astun ski resort, popular mainly among Spanish skiers, is located near the Spanish border with France, in the Pyrenees mountain range.
