At least 30 people are reported to have been injured, 17 of them seriously, after a cable car collapsed in northern Spain.

The resort of Astún in the Spanish Pyrenees, where the incident took place, has been closed and rescue services are on the scene.

Pictures and video circulating on social media show numerous people lying on the snow under the ski lift.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said he was “shocked” by news of the incident.

Ambulances and helicopters transport the injured to nearby hospitals.

One of the Spanish public televisions reports that dozens of people remain hanging on a 15-meter-high chair waiting for rescue.

A witness told local media that it looked like a cable had come loose, chairs had bounced and people had been thrown from the elevator.

The cause of the cable failure is not yet known.

Images on social media purportedly show one of the seat’s flywheels coming off the spoke.

Video released by Spain’s Guardia Civil shows the helicopter flying past the scene before landing to allow emergency workers to disembark.
