Cliftonville are paying tribute to the former defender
Cliftonville say they are “devastated” by the sudden death of defender Michael Newberry.
The Northern Irish club released a social media post this morning about the 27-year-old’s death.

It read: “Cliftonville FC is devastated to learn of the sudden death of Michael Newberry.
“Our condolences go out to Michael’s family and friends, as well as to the many teammates he played with throughout his career, and to fans who will be shocked and saddened by this heartbreaking news.”
Newcastle-born Newberry started out with his hometown club before joining Iceland’s Vikingur Olafsvik before trying his luck in Northern Ireland with Linfield.
He won two Premiership titles before moving across Belfast to Cliftonville this summer. Newberry played in the Boxing Day match against the Crusaders.
His former club Linfield also paid tribute with a post on X which read: “Linfield FC are devastated to learn of the sudden death of our former player, Michael Newberry.
“Linfield have agreed with the NIFL that tonight’s Premiership game against Larne should be postponed.
“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern added: “I am devastated by the news of Michael’s sudden death.
“He was such a lovely, friendly guy and a very popular member of our squad during his time at Linfield. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.”
