Macy’s will close 66 stores in 2025. Here’s where they are


Macy’s on Thursday listed 66 stores it plans to close this year.

Lots of locations that are “not moving forward” which Macy’s said will close permanently are spread across 22 states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee , Texas, Virginia and Washington.

The closing follows a “Bold New Chapter” initiative the retailer has been implementing since last February to “return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth,” according to a press release.

Closing about 150 “underperforming” stores by the end of 2026 is one of the measures Macy’s previously outlined for the initiative.

MACY’S IS ACCELERATING STORE CLOSURES THIS YEAR

A “majority” of the 66 stores Macy’s identified Thursday will close their doors for good during the first quarter of 2025. document specifying locations.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underperforming Macy’s stores so we can focus our resources and prioritize investments in our thriving stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and improved service ,” CEO Tony Spring it is stated in the press release.

Under Macy’s “Bold New Chapter” initiative, the retailer is also investing in its “go-forward locations” and is looking to open more small-format locations. There are a total of 350 “go-forward” stores, the company said.

HOW MACY’S CAN TURN ITS BUSINESS AROUND AS DEPARTMENT STORES STRUGGLE

Macy’s will “streamline and modernize end-to-end operations” as well as open more Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury locations, the retailer said in February when it announced the “Bold New Chapter” plan.

Macy’s is currently open nearly 60 Bloomingdale’s brand locations and 164 Bluemercury-branded stores, according to the website.

During Macy’s December earnings call, Spring reported that Macy’s “Top 50” locations, Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury “were all positive” in the third quarter.

In the three-month period, retail sales generated revenue of 4.7 billion dollars, which represents a drop of almost 2.7% compared to the previous year.

“Year-to-date, we have made progress on our Bold New Chapter strategy and remain on track to achieve our long-term goal of sustainable profitable growth,” Spring said last month.
