Republicans strongly condemned the sentencing of President-elect Trump on Friday, calling it a “disgrace.”
Trump was sentenced to unconditional release on Friday morning in New York. Last year, he was convicted of falsifying business books after he multi-year investigation Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

“What a joke and disgrace,” wrote Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., on X.
“This witch hunt and reign have been an insult to the American people,” she added.
Rep. Rudy Yakym, R-Ind., also spoke out about the sentence, writing, “Today’s ruling is an unfortunate reminder that Democrats will stop at nothing, including weaponizing the justice system to try to destroy President Trump. Rest assured, their efforts have been and will continue to decline, the American comeback begins in 10 days.”

Despite Trump’s attempts to delay the sentencing, it was pushed back only 10 days before his inauguration.
The new president attended the proceedings virtually. “After careful analysis, this court has determined that the only lawful sentence that permits a conviction is an unconditional release,” said Judge Juan Merchan. “At this point I am imposing that sentence covering all 34 counts.”
“Today’s sentencing of President Trump confirms what the American people knew all along: These trials were pure political persecution. The American people have overwhelmingly rejected an armed judiciary and a politicized law. This ends on January 20,” said Rep. Jason Smith, R- Mon, on X

Unconditional release, to which Merchan sentenced Trump, does not impose a sentence on the convicted individual. He claims that the conviction stands. However, this means that the relevant penalties will not be imposed.
While Trump will not face these penalties for the sentence, he could still face obstacles due to his felon status as long as the conviction is upheld.

A key Trump ally, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., reacted to the news, saying, “Finally this baseless charade by NYC liberal activists is over. It’s worth reminding ourselves: President Trump doesn’t have to do this job — he’s doing it to save America.”
Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., denounced the conviction and sentence as “a miserable waste of taxpayer resources that should be used for real crimes that harm New Yorkers.”
