“Well, you’ll have to wait for the outcome. We have stepped into a new era, the beginning of a three-year cycle. I’m sure the anticipation will make things interesting for you,” said Flower. “You can ask me all you want, but that communication hasn’t happened yet.”
RCB’s IPL 2025 auction picks have intrigued fans, especially with Kohli the most obvious choice for captain. Speculations around Rajat Patidar taking the lead has also done the rounds, but Flower clarified that no decision has been made yet.
Kohli’s current form and future prospects
Virat Kohli, who recently featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, had a mixed run with the bat. He has scored 190 runs in five Tests and will soon be seen in action in the upcoming ODI series against Englandstarting February 6th.
Kohli remains central to RCB’s plans. The former captain has been the cornerstone of the franchise, leading them to two IPL finals. However, the elusive title remains missing from RCB’s trophy cabinet. With a strong squad, the franchise will be hoping to clinch the league title in the upcoming season.
Building a strong line-up for IPL 2025
Under the leadership of Andy Flower, RCB have created a formidable batting line-up. Their strategy in the mega auction was focused on strengthening the batting order with powerful batsmen and diverse options. Flower has hinted at a more aggressive approach this season.
“There were two really obvious areas that we felt needed to be addressed, and we picked hitters with a lot of power,” Flower said, discussing the team’s auction strategy.
Opening pair to watch: Kohli and Salt
One of the key talking points for RCB in IPL 2025 is their potential opening partnership. Flower suggested it Phil Salt could join Kohli at the top of the order.
“If you look at the potential line-up, Phil Salt, known for his aggressive opening skills, could partner Virat Kohli at the top,” observed Flower.
Kohli, retained for INR 21 million, is likely to continue to open the innings for RCB. He had a great IPL season in 2024, winning the Orange Cap with 741 runs. Salt, acquired for INR 11.50 crore after an impressive performance with KKR, adds firepower to the opening pair. The Englishman’s aggressive style complements Kohli’s consistency, making them a formidable duo.
Middle order stability with Patidar and Livingstone
Rajat Patidar, retained for INR 11 crore, is expected to take the crucial third spot. Patidar has been a revelation for RCB, scoring consistently in the last two IPL seasons. His performances in domestic cricket are also noteworthy, making him a potential future captain of the franchise.
Liam Livingstonebought for INR 8.75 crore, adds depth and versatility to the middle order. Although his recent IPL seasons have been underwhelming, his ability to clear boundaries and contribute with the ball makes him a valuable asset. His international form is promising and RCB will count on him to deliver in pressure situations.
Lower middle order firepower: Jitesh Sharma and Tim David
To strengthen the lower middle order, RCB bought Jitesh Sharma and re-acquired Tim David. Both players bring finishing strength and adaptability to the team.
“Jitesh Sharma is an exciting young wicketkeeper-batsman who has been outstanding in the domestic circuit. He brings an exciting dynamic to our side,” said Flower.
Jitesh, bought for INR 11 crore, is expected to be at No.5. His finishing defensive ability, demonstrated at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy where he scored at a strike rate of 225.00, makes him a key player in high pressure situations.
Team Davidre-acquired for ₹ 3 crore, likely to take the 6th spot. Known for his powerful hitting and experience in T20 leagues around the world, David’s role in the death over will be crucial to RCB’s success. His familiarity with the franchise, having made his debut with RCB in 2021, adds to his value.
