5. Malcolm Marshall – Complete fast bowler

Combining pace with tactical acumen, Marshall is arguably the best bowler of all time. During the 1981-82 series. he took 33 wickets at an incredible average of 18.84. Fleming admired Marshall’s ability to bowl accurately, his outswingers and his mastery of the reverse swing, all of which made him a nightmare for Australian batsmen.

4. Michael Holding – Whispering Death
“Whispering Death” was the nickname of Holding because of his quiet rush followed by a devastating tempo. On his tour in 1975-76. he took 24 wickets, helping West Indies win the series. Fleming notes Holding’s elegant action and the way he could bowl long spells without losing speed, making him outstanding in Australian conditions.
“That’s another West Indian, that’s Michael Holding. In 1975/76 I didn’t watch that series, it was raw after that average of 17 per ball. 1979, 80, 81, 82 where he was probably the best fast bowler in those series with Dennis Lillee, and in 1984, 85 he complemented Garner (Joel Garner), Marshall and a young Courtney Walsh, whispering death as they called him, nice long run, great pace, great accuracy, scary bouncer, also an outswinger, so No.4 Mikey Holding,” Fleming said.

3. Curtly Ambrose – The Silent Killer
Ambrose tour of Australia 1992-1993. is legendary, where he took 33 wickets in five Tests, including an incredible 7 for 1 in one innings. His height, combined with raw pace and menacing presence, made him one of the most formidable bowlers to face. Fleming highlights Ambrose’s stint at the WACA, where he tore through Australia’s batting line-up with ease.
“Number 3 another West Indian. The great Curtly Ambrose, 78 wickets from 20 overs, three tours, fearsomely intimidated Australian batsmen. Great height like Joel Garner. Very rarely threw a half volley, very rarely was cut down or pulled back. He toppled the Australian top order. For me, he was the one the Aussies felt never got a bad delivery. So he kept the pressure all the time,” Fleming explained.
2. Richard Hadlee – Kiwi legend
Hadlee, known for his impeccable line and length, had an unforgettable tour in 1985-86, earning him the nickname “Punter’s Nightmare”. His ability to swing the ball both ways made him a formidable opponent. Fleming recalls Hadlee’s 15 wickets in the series and his performance in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne stands out as a testament to his skill.
