Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero was given a May 2 fight against Ryan Garcia after Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz decided not to accept it due to his previously scheduled fight next month. This is Rolly’s chance to pull off the upset of a rusty Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) on Turki Al-Sheikh’s card in Times Square, New York.
Rolly enters
Cruz is scheduled to fight Angelo Fierro on Feb. 1 and did not want to negotiate another fight until after his bout. Fans were hoping to see Ryan and Pitbull fight, as it would be much more interesting than watching Rolly’s match.
It is not clear if there were other available fighters who could step in. The 140lb division has many fighters with more talent than Rolly, and it would be great for the fans to see someone else.
Former WBA light heavyweight champion Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs) was knocked out in the eighth round by Pitbull Cruz last year on March 30. It was a surprisingly one-sided fight.
On the May 2 card, Devin Haney will face Jose Ramirez, and heavyweight Martin Bakole will face Efe Ajagba.
