Erling Haaland’s new contract with Man City: How much is the deal worth and what it means for the Premier League champion | Football news

Erling Haaland has signed an extraordinary nine-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City, but what do we know about the financials of the deal?

The deal takes Haaland to the Etihad Stadium until 2034, making it the longest contract in the Premier League and paying for his long-standing ties to Real Madrid.

Here we run through some of the key issues surrounding the deal and what it means for Manchester City’s rebuild – amid the impending 115 charges over alleged financial failings – with the help of a Sky Sports News reporter Ben Ransom.

How did Man City pull off this deal?

What a signing for Manchester City. It is absolutely titanic.

This is a deal that took a long time to make. I’m told there have been months and months of negotiations between outgoing director of football Txiki Begiristain, the Manchester City executive and Haaland and his team.

But there was always an appetite to extend his stay here. He absolutely loves life at Manchester City. There was always a sense from the outside that Haaland was here as a stepping stone for Real Madrid, but he has committed his future here.

It just shows how much he enjoys it.

He is someone who was born into a family that had a real connection to City through his father Alfie Haaland. When he arrived, he really wanted to be part of the furniture. He has already written his name into Manchester City folklore.

What a moment to announce this news…

‘What a moment’ indeed. How should that news be interpreted with the ongoing battle with the Premier League over the alleged 115 allegations?

The news of Haaland’s contract extension comes against the backdrop of Man City’s battle against the Premier League over more than 100 allegations of alleged financial misconduct.

With the most severe potential penalty being relegation, this is a statement of intent from City to reinforce their belief that they have done nothing wrong.

In fact, City believe that everyone in the Premier League should be celebrating the fact that one of the best players in the world has committed to playing in this competition above LaLiga.

Is Haaland now the highest paid player in the Premier League?

Manchester City is keeping the finances of the contract a secret.

But the deal will see an increase on his previous deal, which we know was around £400,000-a-week. He is now undoubtedly Manchester City’s highest earner and, most likely, the highest paid player in the Premier League.

Why nine and a half years?

I was told that the length of the contract has absolutely nothing to do with cost allocation to meet PSR regulations.

Manchester City believes that there is enough space on that front due to the profits they have made in the transfer market in recent seasons.

Rather, it’s an indication of how highly they value Haaland’s outstanding contribution in terms of his goals and their determination to tie him down for as long as possible.
