Player ratings as Endrick sends Los Blancos into Copa del Rey quarter-finals

A late surge from Endrick helped Real Madrid to a 5-2 win against Celta Vigo on Thursday night as Carlo Ancelotti’s side reached the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey after extra time.

Fresh from Sunday’s loss to the Supercopa de Espana to Barcelona, Madrid started the cup in the middle of the week wounded. The capital club struck first, taking the lead in the first half with a stunning individual goal from Kylian Mbappe, who continues to improve with each outing in white.

Vinicius Junior doubled it Madridadvantage within three minutes of resumption, completing a fresh forward drive that involved all three members of Madrid’s attacking trio. However, Celta Vigo would not go down without a fight.

Jonathan Bamba equalized for the visitors in the 83rd minute when Pablo Duran swallowed a sloppy touch from Eduardo Camavinga on the edge of his own penalty area and slotted into the box for his second substitution. Bamba then won a penalty in stoppage time for Celta, getting the ball in front of Raul Asenci who hit the Ivorian international.

Former Barcelona full-back Marcos Alonso – whose grandfather Marquitos was a five-time European Cup winner with Madrid – coolly moved to force extra time.

With a penalty on the horizon, Endrick electrified the Bernabeu with a thunderous drive. The Brazilian was so slandered more than once associated with offset and offered precious few minutes by Ancelotti but dug his under-pressure manager out of a hole with a late goal to give the go-ahead on Thursday night.

Fede Valverde, undisputed Ancelotti the favourite, confirmed Madrid’s passage to the quarter-finals before Endrick grabbed his second of the night with a mischievous strike. Madrid could face Barcelona in the next round but will not face defending cup champions Athletic Club, who were relegated on Thursday.
