Novak Djokovic gets honest about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s chances of breaking his records
Novak Djokovic has made some candid remarks about the potential of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner to break his records. Alcaraz, currently ranked No. 3 in the ATP rankings, and Sinner, who holds the No. 1 spot, have been making a lot of noise in the tennis world lately.
Djokovic made his name in tennis history with an incredible 24 Grand Slam titles, including 10 Australian Opens, three French Opens, seven Wimbledons and four US Opens—making him the most successful male player of all time. In the 2024 season, he added the final piece to his legacy by securing his long-awaited Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Djokovic has always welcomed the new generation of players with open arms, including Grigor Dimitrov, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Andrei Rublev, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem. And of course, he continues to support the rise of Alcaraz and Sinner.
In an interview with GQ Sports on Thursday, January 9, the Serbian tennis star casually remarked that while his records may seem unbreakable to some, he believes that both Alcaraz and Sinner could be the ones who will step into his shoes in the future.
“It is still too early. But, you know, people say my records will never be broken. I doubt it. I mean, Carlos could already be the next guy. Even Jannika,” Djokovic said.
He also emphasized that if Sinner and Alcaraz prioritize their fitness and take care of their bodies, they could achieve long-term success.
“If they take care of the body, if they do things the right way, focus on longevity, focus on the long term, then they can do it,” he added.
At only 21 years old, Spaniard he has already won four Grand Slam titles – two at Wimbledon, one at the US Open and one at the French Open. Reflecting on this remarkable achievement, Djokovic remarked:
“Carlos did something that no one in history has done at such a young age. So the odds are with him. He will complete his [career] I slam very quickly.”
Novak Djokovic could face Carlos Alcaraz in the QFs and Jannik Sinner in the 2025 Australian Open final.
Novak Djokovic will begin his campaign against Nishesh Basavareddy at the Australian Open on Sunday, January 12. The two have never met before on the ATP Tour, so it will be an interesting matchup.
If Djokovic wins, he will then meet Pavel Kotov in the second round, followed by a possible third round meeting with Reilly Opelka or Tomas Machac. Grigor Dimitrov or Jiri Lehecka will be waiting for him in the fourth round.
If the Serb makes it to the quarterfinals, he could face his toughest test yet in the long-awaited clash with Carlos Alcaraz. Alternatively, he could face Sebastian Korda or 2024 US Open semi-finalist Jack Draper.
In the semifinals, the 24-time Grand Slam champion could face formidable opponents such as Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul. If he reaches the final, he could fight against world number 1 Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz or Alex de Minaur.
