‘I’ll buy a beer!’ – Jurgen Klopp jokes at the garden parade if Man City are stripped of their titles
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said he will throw a party in Mallorca if Manchester City are stripped of their Premier League titles due to financial failings.
City were investigated by the Premier League after allegedly breaching 115 financial rules between 2009 and 2018 – claims one-time Champions League the winners vehemently deny it – and the case was referred to an independent commission in February 2023.
The decision of the independent commission is expected in the first quarter of this year, with a high fine, significant deduction of points, relegation from Premier League and by subtracting the previous titles from all possible outcomes.
Klopp has taken on a new role as head of global football at Red Bull, managing Leipzig, Salzburg and the Red Bulls, and was asked at the launch what his reaction would be if City were found guilty.
We had that discussion when I left, Klopp said. “I haven’t spent much time in Mallorca because I’m always flying around the place. But if it were to happen, I told all the people who wanted to [come]: ‘Just book a flight to Mallorca. I’ll buy a beer!’ We’d have our own parade in my garden.”
“Oh my God… what a headline! We’ll see. I haven’t been following (details of the case) at all. It could take two months (to find)? Wow.”
Klopp was City’s biggest rival for several years after re-establishing Liverpool as one of the most dominant forces in English football.
The Reds won their first top-flight title in 30 years as they stormed to the Premier League title in 2020/21, finishing runners-up to Pep Guardiola in the 2018/19 campaign. and 2021/22. – the first of those other -place ends saw Liverpool losing only one game and finishing with 97 points.
After eight and a half grueling years at the helm, Klopp decided to leave Liverpool this summer citing burnout and the need to retire from management. He was succeeded at Anfield by Arne Slott, who has enjoyed a seamless transition and is top of the Premier League table with more than half the season – City they are 12 points behind and are lost in sixth place.
