Lauren Bell reflects on England’s performance after losing their Ashes opener to Australia
England are ready to bounce back in Melbourne after losing the first game of the Ashes on Sunday. Lauren Bell, the English striker, believes that just a bad start to a rather long series will not have a big impact. She said: “We’ll just have to reset” after the 4-wicket loss to Australia.
A low-scoring first match ends in Australia’s favour
England were bowled out for just 204 inside 44 overs as Ashleigh Gardner led Australia’s bowling attack with 3-19. In the first game later, Australia chased the target with 67 balls into space. However, Lauren Bell, who was frugal in claiming 1-25 in her nine overs, said: “We had 200 on a pitch that I think the first pair was about 250 so I made an effort to almost defend it , I think you can take a lot of confidence from that.”

Alice Capsey is down Ellyse Perry The expulsion of Lauren Filer and Sophie Ecclestone tampering added to the woes England. Bell addressed the issues, noting, “There are a few things we could definitely work on. Obviously Australia very well caught and we dropped a few at important times. Moving forward, there are a few places we can work on and really focus on the next game, but I think as a whole we can take a fair amount of confidence from the game.”
“Imagine it’s zero-zero and start again”
Lauren Bell sounded upbeat even after a poor start to the Ashes. She explained: “We’re one game into a pretty long streak and we’re down two-nil, but we’ll have to start the next game and imagine it’s nil-nil and start again.” She added: “That’s the beauty of these series. We can come back and we’ll just have to reset and continue with our plan and just go again.”
England will be looking forward to a comprehensive performance in Melbourne before moving on to the deciding ODI series in Hobart. The Women’s Ashes will then see the arch rivals go head-to-head in three T20Is and a 4-day Test match. “We’re just going to have to adapt really quickly, communicate with the girls who may have played at Junction Oval and try to get as much information about the pitch as possible. Then the opening shots, if we bat first, or at the opening bowlers, it’s really important to communicate what the pitch is doing as soon as we arrive there,” Bell opined.
