During the meeting between Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder in the 29th game Big Bash League 2024-25 at Bellerive Oval, fans experienced an unexpected moment when Sydney Thunder captain, David Warnerhe experienced a rare incident.
David Warner’s broken bat
In the 4th over of Sydney Thunder’s innings, Warner’s bat broke while facing the Hobart Hurricanes fast bowler, Riley Meredith. Warner tried a powerful shot on the full delivery but mistimed it, sending the ball to mid-on. In the process, the momentum of his club’s swing caused it to break. The broken bat almost hit Warner in the head, but luckily, it collided with his helmet, sparing him injury. The moment left both fans and players stunned, adding an unexpected twist to the match.

Despite the bat-smashing incident, Warner showed incredible resilience and composure. The Sydney Thunders skipper continued his stellar performance, finishing with an unbeaten 88 off 66 balls. His knock included seven boundaries and was powered by a strong strike rate of 133.33.

Riley Meredith strikes early on the powerplay
Batting first, Sydney Thunder set a target of 165, largely thanks to Warner’s heroics. However, Hobart Hurricanes’ Meredith excelled with the ball, claiming two crucial wickets. Meredith’s first breakthrough came during the powerplay in the 4th over. He rejected Konstas himself with a sharp bouncer rushing the batsman, forcing him into a wrong pull. The upper edge of Konstas’ glove gently hit his hands Matthew Wade behind the stumps.
Crucial blow in deadly overs
Meredith’s second wicket came at a critical moment in the 19th over. He cheated with a slower short ball Chris Greenwhich he tried to cut but ended up catching with a spoon Nathan Ellis on the cover. The dismissal highlighted Meredith’s clever use of variation and his ability to deliver under pressure. Green departed after scoring just 8 runs.
