My grandfather was born in South Carolina in 1921 and was forced from school in third grade because there was no need for a “educated black boy”.
He never learned to read or write, but he had a photographic memory and a spirit of resistance. When I was young, he told me, “You can be a victim or you can be winning – but you can’t be both.”
Growing up in poverty and raising a single mother, she gave me a deep appreciation of those who were shaking the path so I could be where I am today.
During Segregation, my mother couldn’t drink from a water fountain, stay at a hotel or swim in a public pool with a white person.

How am I thinking about Month of Black History, I can’t help but think about how I used to sacrifice my family – and I know I’m not the only one.
Their strength and perseverance shuddered at me to persevere in my life.
As Black Senator In American history and chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, I saw first -hand that poverty did not discriminate. Unfortunately, people from all different races and layers of life are struggling to afford basic supplies such as food and shelter. It is our responsibility to continue to raise these people – regardless of their background, family history or where they live.
I developed a plan – built about three of my legislative proposals – to empower dissatisfied communities like the one I grew up in. By enhancing accessible housing, Growing small businesses and strengthening the initiative of my zone capabilities, a tool for encouraging investment in unwanted areas of the United States, we can positively influence the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans.
The housing has long been the cornerstone of the building of wealth in America. However, today too many families, especially in low -income and working class communities, are struggling to approach.
While the national average for home -owned homes is 65.7%, we have to close the gap owned by a home between households with low and high incomes. Only 47% of households in the group with the lowest income were owned by houses, compared to 81% in the highest revenue group.
This gap directly stems from outdated policies and markets of apartments that have become increasingly inaccessible to the people who need it most.
My legislation, “The Law on the Road to Housing,” will overthrow outdated obstacles and unlock billions to make the ownership of homes accessible.
As a black senator in American history and chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, I saw first -hand that poverty did not discriminate.
We need to expand access to mortgage with small dollars, redefined housing and modernization of public apartments. When families own their homes instead of renting them, they build generational wealth and close the gap in wealth. We need to ensure that this opportunity is available to everyone.
Another tool for economic mobility is entrepreneurship.
I know this firsthand.
When I started my small company, I went to the bank and looked for the opportunity to get a loan. My best property was then in 1990, a 10-year-old car with 253,000 miles. It would not be considered that the property, maybe a responsibility, but it was my only means of transportation.
In those days, people could get a loan with character, and because of this loan my financial life changed, and my American dream became a reality.
If I didn’t get that loan, maybe I’m not where I am today.
Unfortunately, others did not have the same blessing.
Extension of capital approach and reducing regulatory loads of community banks, which are crucial to support to local and small companies, will strengthen the first and non -traditional entrepreneurs.

My legislation, the “Law on the Establishment of Main Street in America” aims to improve the capital approach to a wider spectrum of entrepreneurs, especially those in dissatisfied communities, including rural/non-metroopolitan areas.
My proposal of the law has the strong support of my colleagues of the Republicans in the Senate Banking Committee because it seeks to simplify regulations for small and new public companies who want to grow, while encouraging new investment avenues for Americans eager for business locally.

I believe that when companies bloom, the whole communities are progressing. Access to the capital should not be reserved for a few privileged.
Financial involvement means to ensure that people who pay their accounts responsibly reflect on their credit results, making it easier for them to obtain a loan or mortgage. My legislative efforts have encouraged to reform the common sense because the process of determining the person’s credit capacity is obsolete and is not holistic.
As I think about the month of black history, I can’t help but think about how I used to sacrifice my family – and I know I’m not the only one.
When we find the right opportunities, better things will come.
Throughout our initiative of the Zone, we unlocked almost $ 85 billion invested in community troubles. This program successfully encourages a long -term, sustainable growth of communities in an adverse position without genting them or does not change people aim to help.
