Pope Francis has a “initial, gentle” kidney failure, but it remains awake, says the Vatican

Pope Francis remained in critical state on Sunday, Vatican said.

Blood tests show early kidney failure, but 88-year-old PontiF remains awake and “well-oriented” and attended the mass, Vatican said. The Pope fought against pneumonia and complex lung infections.

In his latest update, the Vatican said Francis had no more respiratory crises since Saturday night, but he still received the high kicks of additional oxygen.

Some blood tests showed “initial, mild, kidney failure”, but doctors said he was under control. The decrease in the number of thrombocytes, necessary for clotting, which was first discovered on Saturday, was stable.

“The complexity of the clinical picture and the required waiting for drug therapies provide some feedback, dictating that the prognosis remains reserved,” the doctors concluded.
