Mjanmar: displaced by conflict, farmers grow opium -maks to survive

Last year, Mjanmar became the world’s largest opium producer, harvesting 1,080 tons. While opium poppies have long flourished in Rural Mjanmar, production has increased after the military coup in 2021 and the subsequent conflict between the ruling Hunt and the group for armed resistance, the devastating economy and internally displaced by about 3.5 million people. Now, farmers, including many of the displaced, say they have few alternatives, but to grow a crop to survive.
