Real Madrid are growing frustrated with Carlo Ancelotti and could sack the Italian if the 15-time Champions League winners fail to progress beyond the play-off stages of this season’s competition, a report in Spain has claimed.
Despite the superb signing of Kylian Mbappe in the summer, Madrid have repeatedly underperformed this season and hit a new low earlier this month when they were beat Barcelona 5-2 in the Supercopa de España final.
Spanish publication Relevo states that Ancelotti sees that humiliating defeat as a kind of last warning, aware that another big setback will probably cost him his job.
It is claimed that Madrid they were already close to sacking Ancelotti this season after back-to-back defeats to Barcelona and AC Milan during October and November, and director of football Santiago Solari has been informed that he could be tasked with returning to the club if Ancelotti is sacked.
Those responsible for making such a decision ended up standing by Ancelotti, but once again found themselves facing a debate. It is claimed that Madrid will cut ties with the Italian if he oversees more disastrous results in the Champions League, demanding the team progress to the knockout stages despite the threat of a huge play-off tie against top teams such as Bayern Munich or Atletico Madrid.
If Ancelotti leaves before the end of the season, it is claimed that Solari will be chosen as a temporary replacement, but Madrid have already eyed Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso as their next permanent manager. The current plan is to sign the Spaniard in the summer of 2026, when Ancelotti’s contract expires, but that could be moved.
Ancelotti will probably have to win as well LaLiga or the Champions League in order to keep his job after this season. Club officials are said to be losing faith in the 65-year-old’s ability to turn things around and will be closely monitoring the team’s performances.
