West Brom must sign an “outstanding” replacement for Maja

West Bromwich Albion fans will be feeling uneasy at the moment, with the club’s inactivity in the transfer market worrying fans, along with the fact that Carlos Corberan’s successor has still not been found.

Indeed, it is now approaching a full month since the Spaniard left the Hawthorns to take up a new challenge in Valencia, which has seen the Baggies hierarchy search for a replacement ever since.

However, they could now have their man of choice in Tony Mowbray, who is apparently the dearest for the vacancy, having previously been in charge of the West Midlands club at the start of his managerial career.

Now a reunion could be on the horizon. Unfortunately, if the 61-year-old does arrive, he will have to cope without the expertise of Josh Maja for some white.

Josh Maja’s injury setback

The Maja star is now out for several weeks with a leg injury that will require surgery, he confirmed The official website of the West Brom club.

It’s a huge blow for West Brom going forward, with the striker in the form of his life for promotion hopes before this unwanted setback occurred, with the former Sunderland striker 12 league strikes of 26 performances.

Now, the Baggies really lack a focal point up top, with Karlan Grant his team’s second top goalscorer in the league this season with inferior sixwhile the only striker in the club now is Devante Cole who has only 109 minutes of action along with his name in the championship for 2024/25.

So the top priority for Mowbray – if he takes the reins any time soon – would be bringing in a game-changing striker to cushion the huge blow of Maja being sent off, and he could already have the exact name in his head that can come in and make a big difference.

A replacement for Maja, West Brom should look to sign

The player in question is Ben Brereton Diaz who really shone under Mowbray when the pair were together at Blackburn Rovers.

With a Chilean subject of interest from fellow Championship side Sheffield Unitedit could be a smart move at the Baggies’ end to test Southampton’s resolve with a bowl of their own. Indeed, the former Blackburn number 22 would surely be delighted at the prospect of re-uniting with his old manager.

As can be seen, Mowbray ended up making the best of Saints’ failure by the time he quit the Riversiders, and his final campaign in charge saw Brereton Diaz hit a superb 22 league strikes from 37 contests.

The veteran manager’s patience eventually paid off after once marking the 25-year-old as “extraordinary” even when the goals were not met regularly. Now, Mowbray’s famous arm around his shoulder could perhaps reawaken the beast if Brereton Diaz dons the West Brom strip any time soon.

West Brom fans will be hoping this saga involving a new manager ends acrimoniously, but if they can bring Mowbray in with the added firepower of Brereton Diaz also joining, the long wait will be well worth it.
