Virgil van Dijk equaled Liverpool’s great record in a win over Lille

Virgil van Dijk equaled Liverpool’s club record for most wins by a top 50 player in the Champions League as the Reds saw off Lille on Tuesday.

Van Dijk played 90 minutes comfortable 2-1 winwho kept Liverpool’s 100% form in the Champions League this season.

It was his 50th appearance for Liverpool in the Champions League and he emerged victorious for the 35th time, equaling the previous record of the legendary Phil Neal.

Neal, who is the most successful player in Liverpool’s history with a return of 23 trophies between 1974 and 1985, won four European Cups during his time at Anfield and is currently seventh in the club’s all-time appearances list with 650 appearances to his name.

Manager Arne Slott remains impressed with Van Dijk, whose expiring contract does not affect his form on the pitch alongside Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“The situation did not affect the group and in fact, only one of the players had a bad performance this season and that was Trent against [Manchester] United,” Slott said Amazon Prime before the game.

“Every other game we’ve played, Virgil, Mo and Trent have always hit or exceeded the standard.”
