Victims feared after car plows into crowd in New Orleans

More victims are feared in New Orleans after a vehicle reportedly plowed into a crowd on popular Bourbon Street, the BBC’s US news partner CBS reported.

A New Orleans police spokesman said “initial reports indicate that a car may have struck a group of people” in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The spokesman added that there were “reported deaths”.

A CBS reporter saw multiple people on the ground with injuries.

Witnesses told the organization that the vehicle rammed into the crowd and then the driver began firing a weapon, prompting police to return fire. Police have not confirmed this report.

Nola Ready, a New Orleans government agency, posted on social media that there had been a “mass casualty incident at Canal and Bourbon streets” and told those nearby to “remove the area.”
