Donald Trump has vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico “America’s Gulf”, after attacking the US’s southern neighbor as a “very dangerous place”.

Trump’s latest criticism of Mexico came as he spoke to reporters from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida less than two weeks before he will be inaugurated for a second term in the White House.

During a press conference, he promised to “impose high tariffs on Denmark” unless the country relinquishes control of Greenland.

He also called on NATO members to spend 5 percent of their GDP on defense, confirming a report in the Financial Times from last month. The move, which would more than double the current target, marks a new challenge for the transatlantic alliance.

The president-elect refused to rule out the use of force to conquer Greenland or take control of the Panama Canal.

Asked if he would rule out the use of military or economic coercion for either goal, he said: “No, I can’t convince you of either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security. . . We need Greenland for reasons of national security.”

This is a developing story
