Trump takes aim at culture war lightning rod in early executive orders

President-elect Trump plans to focus on federal diversity and pro-transgender initiatives among his own an early list of executive ordersofficials said Monday.

The latter order will be aimed at “defending women from gender, ideology, extremism and returning biological truth to the federal government,” officials told reporters in a telephone interview.

The order would clarify that it is US government policy to recognize only two genders, male and female. They would be classified based on reproductive function, not chromosomes, officials said.

References to “gender” for federal employees will be changed to “gender”.

Trump officials also signaled that the Biden administration’s decision to offer an “X” gender passport option would be reversed, telling reporters that “the Secretary of State, Homeland Security and all other agencies will ensure that official government documents, including passports and visas, accurately reflect gender.”

Other aspects of the order would include ensuring that taxpayer funds do not go toward gender reassignment surgeries and repealing the Biden administration’s guidelines on the preferred use of pronouns in schools.

Another order mentioned would roll back the federal government’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

It aims to end taxpayer funding for diversity initiatives, with Trump officials citing examples such as the USDA’s environmental justice program, the Treasury Department’s diversity training and the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) diversity hiring efforts.

The order would direct the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management to coordinate with various agencies to end any similar programs.

Trump has promised to sign more than 200 executive orders within his first 24 hours as president — many targeting culture war issues and border securitytwo cornerstones of his campaign for the White House.
